Welcome to the Ballentine Computer LabLocated in room 1306 of the first floor, the Computer Lab is
the place where students go for their Computer Extension Class
taught by Nona Hardy. Every homeroom class in kindergarten through
fifth grade attends Computer Class each day for a 5-day period to
learn technology skills from the North
Carolina Computer/Technology Skills Curriculum. Students
spend other 5-day periods attending Art, Music, Physical Education,
and Science Extension classes. Homerooms rotate through these extension
classes several times during the school year. We use the term “Extension” for these five specialty classes because our goal, in addition to teaching the North Carolina goals and objectives for each special area, is to be an extension of what is being taught in the classroom. Mrs. Hardy collaborates with homeroom teachers to incorporate skills and concepts from the classroom with the technology curriculum. For example, kindergarten students learn how to use the delete, shift, enter key, and space bar to practice making patterns on the computer, third graders learn how to cut, copy, paste, and use draw tools in a word-processing program to create a book of third grade geometry terms and illustrations, and fifth graders visit Websites about American Immigration to find information and images to create a PowerPoint slideshow about this social studies topic. The Computer Laboratory Classroom is equipped with 30 IBM and
Dell networked computers so every child has his or her own computer
workstation. There is also an LCD projector connected to the teacher’s
computer for whole-group demonstration and presentations; 2 networked
laser printers, 1 networked color printer, scanner, CD burner, and
digital cameras. Every computer has Internet access through
a LAN line using Microsoft Internet Explorer and the following software
programs are primarily used for instruction: Microsoft
2003 (Includes MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher, and Access) In addition to these programs, we have several other software programs used for classroom instruction throughout the school: Accelerated
Reader If you have any questions or comments about the Computer Extension
at Ballentine Elementary School, please email Nona Hardy at nthardy@wcpss.net.
