Mr. Courtine's Class Header
My mission is to provide experiences that help my students learn to overcome obstacles and become lifelong learners.

Welcome to the Integrated Studies Class. You can view your grade level's page by clicking on the link above. Content will be added and updated as activities are completed throughout the year.

What is Integrated Studies?

This class is designed to support math instruction in the regular classroom through integration with reading, writing, science and social studies. My main goal is to answer that question that every student has asked, "Why do we need to know this?" Students will complete activities that help:

-develop skills that are essential for their current grade level
-allow them to use these skills in real life situations
-involve them in Ballentine Elementary School campus improvements
-involve them in community service
-learn to use math in a fun way in their daily lives

Students will see me as their extension class for one week at a time.

How can I volunteer in or donate to the class?

Since this is a new position, many materials will be needed; ranging from books to technology to supplies for individual activities. If you would like to donate any items, please ask me about what is needed. The first opportunity to help your child and his/her school is available now. I have applied for a grant through Donors Choose, and you can help by CLICKING HERE TO DONATE.

I am in need of small prizes for the weekly Problem of the Week. Each grade level has a problem. Each Friday, I take all the correct answers and pick one winner for each grade level. That student receives a small prize. If you would like to donate prizes, please e-mail me. Acceptable prizes are pencils, erasers, and other things like those.

There will be certain activities that require parent assistance during class. I would like to compile a list of parents who are willing to help when their child is in my class. I will send an e-mail to you when your child is going to have my class and your help is needed. There might also be material preparation that you can help with at home or during the school day. If you are interested in being on your child's class e-mail list or in helping prepare materials, please send me your e-mail address. Thanks.

One of the main goals of this class is to have every child participate in a community service project. If you have any contacts within the community that like working with elementary schools, please send me their information so I can pursue activities that involve them.

What is happening in the class this week?

Each grade level will have a weekly "Problem of the Week" contest. The problems will be posted on a bulletin board in the cafeteria and on the grade level's page on this web site. Students can submit their answers anytime that week. Students who submit the correct answer will be posted in the cafeteria each week. One winner from each grade level will be chosen and will receive a prize as long as prizes last.

Students in every grade level will be helping me with another grant. I am pursuing a grant to build a HUGE hopscotch course on the playground. Students in each grade level will be working on activities that help in the design and funding of this course. If I receive the grant, students will help paint the course and then install it.

What is each class learning this week?
(Note: There is not a pattern to seeing the classes due to trackouts. I see some classes a few times before I see others even once. It will balance by the end of the year, but it does cause different classes to learn things at different times.

Kindergarteners are learning about shapes, AB patterns, and counting.
1st Graders are learning about counting and writing the numbers in word form.
2nd Graders are learning about place value, counting strategies, and measuring inches and feet.
3rd Graders are learning about eating healthy at fast food restaurants, and fractions.
4th Graders are learning about whether the high gas prices really make trips more expensive, area and perimeter.
5th Graders are learning about range, median and mode.
